Save Your Brain: Eat Olives, Nuts, Fish, Seeds, Avocados…

Researchers have found yet another reason to stick to a Mediterranean menu of fish, olives, and red wine.

Save Your Brain: Eat Olives, Nuts, Fish, Seeds, Avocados…

Olives are part of a brain-healthy Mediterranean diet menu, but they're far from the only choice.

RODALE NEWS, EMMAUS, PA—If we all ate like Mediterraneans, we'd live longer, have healthier hearts, and, according to a study being presented at the upcoming American Academy of Neurology meeting, have healthier brains. The study analyzed brain tissue among a wide sampling of Mediterranean diet-eating folk and found that people who followed the diet most closely saw less brain deterioration than people who were less devoted. The good news is, the diet is so varied that even if you don't like, say, fish, there are plenty of other options on the Mediterranean diet menu that you're bound to enjoy.

THE DETAILS: Researchers recruited 712 adults living in New York City and assessed how closely they followed the Mediterranean diet: lots of nuts, legumes, olives, olive oil, fish, and whole grains, a moderate intake of wine, and very little red meat or dairy products. The adults were divided into three groups based on low, medium, or high adherence. Nearly six years after the initial dietary assessment, the adults were given MRI scans, during which the researchers looked for small areas of dead brain tissue that have been linked to thinking problems. They found that those most faithful to a Mediterranean diet had a 36 percent lower chance of having areas of dead brain tissue than those least faithful to the diet. Moderate Mediterranean-dieters had a 21 percent lower chance compared to the least adherent dieters. The association was even stronger in women: The strictest followers of a Mediterranean diet were 45 percent less likely to have dead tissue than the low-adherence group.

I think we need to bring more ideas for this purpose. Involvement of young people can be handy in this regard. I am happy to find a good post here.

local is relative, folks!

For the mediterraneans, olives, avocadoes and even fish were local, fresh and cheaply available food sources. If you live in the North American prairies, these things are not local or inexpensive! Eating fresh produce and good fats is a fantastic idea, but let's not encourage people to eat the mediterranean diet and then tell them it's good for the environment.

Healthy fats

I eat olives, nuts and seeds and olive oil every day. I frequently eat avocados and beans. I use apricot kernal oil on my skin. People constantly comment on how beautiful my skin is.

olive oil

my aunt - who was sicilian [she came to the united states as a young child] used olive oil every day. even when she was well into her late 80s -- her skin still looked young - no wrinkles anywhere. her face was smooth and unlined.

i definitely vote for more olive oil in one's diet.

Olive oil

My husband and I use olive oil every day. Salads, baking, sautes, eggs, and you name it, is done with olive oil. I also use olive oil on my skin and it is a perfect moisturizer. Believe it or not, there is no odor from using it as such. I also put it on my heels and the bottom of my feet for softer than soft skin. If you can, first thing in the morning, before breakfast, down a tsp. or tbls.of this wonderful oil, and your skin will look so beautiful. you will be amazed!!!! Try it before you knock it, it works. It was used in Biblical days and we are so lucky we have olive oil, extra virgin olive oil yet, available to us thousands of years later. Jeannie

Olives & such

My wife & I use alot of olive oil. WE joke that we have become EVOO snobs. But it must work because our blood work comes back excellent.
